European Symposium
on Substance Use among Students

The idea for a symposium series on substance use in student populations originated from a workshop on the topic at the 2007 EUPHA conference. As discussed at the workshop attending university or college often coincides with a transitional period from adolescence into adulthood, and also often the first experience of living independently from direct parental supervision. Alcohol and drug consumption at this time may have a number of negative consequences and could contribute to later life trajectories of harmful substance use. However whilst there are challenges there are also unique opportunities for interventions with this population and, as highlighted in the most recent event, possibilities to engage with students in a positive and productive way.

To date there have been four ESSUS events, held every two years. The 1st European Symposium on Substance Use among Students was organised and hosted by the University of Antwerp in 2008, with the second event held at Pavol Jozef Safarik University in Kosice in 2010. The third symposium was held at the University of Bradford in the UK in June 2012. The venue of the 4th European Symposium on Substance Use among Students was the Leibniz-Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology - BIPS in Bremen, Germany, on the 26th and 27th of June 2014

The fifth European Symposium on Substance Use among Students will be hosted by The INSERM Unit 1073, Rouen School of Medicine at the University of Rouen and the Epidemiology and Health Promotion Department of the Rouen University Hospital, in Rouen, France on 30th June and 1st July 2016.
